As many of you know, I have been doing
restaurant marketing for over 25 years now. Some of you reading
this are my clients, some are my Journal of Restaurant Marketing
and/or Restaurant E-Sales Xpress subscribers. Some of
you have seen me at the various workshops across the USA and
Canada.
About 30 years ago, I was the first
to develop database marketing programs for restaurants. A
lot of restaurants and other consultants laughed at me back then,
believing that having a database --the ability to have names
and birth dates of your customers, would never increase sales.
Those who did listen laughed all the way to the bank.
Those that didn't are still playing desperate catch-up.
Finally, there was a degree of acceptance
because brand name companies started popping up all over the
place, claiming to be database marketing experts and having the
"golden formula" for a successful mailing program.
The problem was these companies all eventually folded. They could
never understand the restaurant business, like I do.
And then, despite my warnings, restaurants
climbed on the frequency reward club concept. I predicted these
reward clubs would fail for a number of reasons--and in fact
99.7% of those restaurants that did implement these reward programs,
saw them fail and their investment lost. Again few listened.
The ones that did listen to me, using the "surprise and
wow your customer concept," laughed all the way to the bank.
The ones that continue to play the reward game, are trying desperately
to get out of it, without making their customers angry. Good

And now, we're approaching the present
where email is the most important and powerful application of
the Internet. I started email marketing with restaurants about
12 years ago, when it was unheard of, and AOL and Prodigy
were the first Internet companies on the scene. Now, there are
zillions of email companies asking for your business to handle
your restaurant email marketing program. And, they don't understand
anything about your business or the concept of increasing sales!
I
challenge any company that does email programs for restaurants
to stand up and say they are true, experienced restaurant marketing
